Every now and then something comes along as an automotive journalist that blows you away. It has happened with the 2015 Mercedes Benz S550 4MATIC. . There is no other way to say it – I absolutely love this car.

The S Class sedans from Mercedes have always been benchmarks in luxury but never before has the S Class delivered sexy good looks, ultra luxury, and incredible technology into a 2-door Grand Touring Coupe. This vehicle oozes equal amounts of sexiness and a statement of personal success to the world outside. For years, the big S Class sedans have been the CEO’s choice of personal transportation. I expect for those like myself who love big coupes that this will be a grand slam hit for the automaker.

All-new just last year, the latest S-Class has again thrown down the gauntlet with class-leading and class-exclusive technology that makes Mercedes’ flagship sedan and coupe nearly smart enough to drive itself. Rivals such as the BMW 7 series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Jaguar XJ find themselves in a constant state of playing catch up to the S Class. Value shoppers will find lots of value in the Hyundai Equus and Kia 900, but the curbside appeal of this flagship luxury offering from Mercedes makes the high price of entry easier to understand.

Driving the big Benz Coupe is pure joy, even in base form. With much of its structure built out of aluminum, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class feels light for its size as you throw it into a corner with sports car like agility. The ride of the standard S-Class’s Airmatic cushion-of-air suspension with adaptive damping is firm without being jarring and comfortable without losing its good handling. My “base” S550 4MATIC model has impressive acceleration and power thanks to a twin-turbocharged V8 engine that enables the S-Class Coupe to blast from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Very impressive number for a vehicle this large and heavy. Not long ago, those were supercar sprint numbers. Mercedes outstanding all wheel drive system 4MATIC does a great job of putting the power to the ground at all 4 corners.

Inside, you are surrounded by the finest leathers and wood with lots of exclusive features like heated armrest and center console, the seats offer a hot-stone-massage setting as one of the multicontour-seat massage functions, and a glove-box-mounted fragrance atomizer that lets you infuse a choice of scents throughout the S-Class cabin. Technology is everywhere from twin 12.3-inch high-resolution color screens that relay driving information and infotainment to lots of cool LED lighting. Indulgence isn’t lost on rear-seat passengers, lots of comfort and great speaker placement make it a wonderful place to spend time.

Lots of goodies come standard on the coupe that would be optional on other offerings or unavailable in other cars. Among the standouts are 16-way power front seats, an audiophile 13-speaker Burmester audio system couple with DVD and CD player, and great navigation system and power rear sunshade. Also standard are some highly advanced safety systems, including autonomous braking at speeds up to 65 mph. Another standard S-Class feature is 24-hour roadside assistance that never expires.

My test vehicle is equipped with the next generation of safe (infrared nighttime vision display and Distronic Plus with radar-based cruise control and autonomous steering to keep you within lanes). In between are even higher-grade leather seats with headrests so soft they feel like pillows, 4-zone climate control and the mbrace Plus with apps and access to a Mercedes-Benz concierge. Wow.

Now, back to reality. My loaded base S Class S550 4Matic Coupe came in at a sticker price of $158K. If you want a V-12 Turbo or an AMG variant, expect to pay in the $225,000 range.

I was fine with the lovely 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V8 power plant pumping out 449 horsepower and a nice flat 516 lb-ft of torque across the RPM range. Fuel economy is rated at 16-MPG city and 24 MPG highway. The seven speed automatic is nothing but superb.

The styling is stunning the front end treatment in my test vehicle has beautiful sweeping headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals, produce a uniquely striking appearance in the exclusive Edition 1 model. The complete vehicle design strikes a great balance between pure sexiness, Mercedes Benz tradition and raw emotion. Price no object, this luxury GT coupe is one of the finest I have ever driven.

For those lucky few, you will not be disappointed in any way. For the rest of us, I better stop off and pick up a lottery ticket.
