So I’m filling the gas tank at a self-serve station close to Orlando’s International Airport and there’s guy in green Ram pickup hovering nearby. Hopefully, everything’s OK and he’s just interested in the car. Sure enough, a few seconds later, I make eye contact with him and he says, “I never seen that Model Range Rover before.” He’s right. Behold in all its glory the most powerful Range Rover to date the Sport SVR model.

2016 SVR range rover badgeI proceed to tell the gentleman about this magnificent high performance machine. He is very impressed and off he goes in a Ram pickup into the darkness of the night with dreams of a new SVR under his Christmas tree.

There are very few vehicles being manufactured at any price that can venture off road, take on the full force of the German Nurburing motorsports complex and engulf its passengers in ultimate luxury. The all-new special SVR can do all those things and more.

Who would believe that there is market for two-and-a-half-ton performance brutes with the Porsche Cayenne Turbos as well as the tasty Mercedes AMG and BMW M Badged high performance SUV’s available right now? Around the bend will be the Hellcat powered Trackhawk 707HP variant of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in full SRT glory. It makes sense for Range Rover to offer an ultimate performance version of its Sport model.

During testing and development, the SVR recorded a Nordschleife lap time of just 8 minutes 14 seconds. The SVR made its grand debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, powering up the 1.16-mile course to thundering applause from the motorsports community.

In SVT form, the familiar supercharged 5.0 liter V-8 is pumped up to 550 Horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque. The SVR’s engine pumps out 40 more horsepower and 41 more pound-feet of torque than the version in the standard Range Rover Sport Supercharged model.

It is not a great deal quicker or stickier than the Sport Supercharged, however it does feel more tensed and eager. It uses the same excellent eight-speed automatic transmission, the same suspension setup, the same four-wheel-drive system, and the same electrically assisted steering system as the lesser sport model, but Land Rover has modified them for more immediacy and responsiveness.

Land Rover has tuned the SVR’s suspension system with four-corner air springs, adaptive magnetorheological dampers, and hydraulic anti-roll bars for not only better body control but also less roll. They even swapped out the rear sub frame bushings for stiffer pieces. The result is impressive: The SVR feels competent and spry, ready to rock and roll a touch of the throttle.

My test model was painted a beautiful Estoril Blue complete with deeper, hungrier-looking front fascia; a new rear-bumper cover for the quad exhausts; the blacked-out trim and front grille, rear spoiler and lots of other cool goodies from the 21-inch alloy wheels with 275/45 R21 all-season Continental Cross Contact tires to the painted brake calibers.

2016 Range Rover SVR interior imageInside, my test vehicle was chock full of carbon fiber trim and aluminum pieces. It was absolutely stunning in the Ebony Black and Cirrus White color combo.

The SVR comes with unique 14-way sport leather seats with large side bolsters that are supremely comfortable. There’s a near-matching set in the rear outboard positions with a flat bench portion between them for the occasional fifth occupant. The SVR test vehicle was loaded with a ton of options including a terrific Meridian sound system, and adaptive cruise control and lots more bringing the sticker price to $124,540.

The carbon fiber even lives under the hood where the 550HP power plant is treated with an optional cover. The guy at the gas station in the Ram pickup just about fainted at the sight of that goodie.

The SVR can sprint from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds with an electronically limited top track speed of 162 mph. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the first Land Rover vehicle to wear the new high-performance SVR badge. We look forward to Special Vehicle Operations turning out more models in the year to come and so will the lucky few who will take delivery of the ultimate performance Range Rover.
