I have been waiting for a chance to drive the Audi A7 since the vehicle’s introduction to the world a couple of years back. What a wonderful surprise, when Prestige Auto calls me and tells me they are bringing the flagship A7 RS7 to sample for a week.

Painted in trendy Nardo Gray, this is a dream vehicle for someone who would love to own a “price no object super car” but needs a daily driver with practicality as part of the equation. For example, you have done really well career wise, and everyday you lust after a Lamborghini but need to bring two kids to school everyday. Here is the answer to your very nice dilemma.

The RS7 leaps from 0-60 in the mid 3 second range thanks to its turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that churns out 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That comes out ten more hp and 118 more lb-ft than the flagship V10 engine in Audi’s R8. That’s Audi 2 seat exotic supercar. Even though, the RS 7 weighs nearly 900 pounds more than the R8 V10. Plus both cars have about the same acceleration times below 100 MPH.

The RS7 is quiet around town at normal speeds and delivers a plus ride. With its standard adaptive air suspension and beautiful seats, the R7 is peaceful and comfortable at all speeds. If you are careful with the accelerator pedal the RS 7 will reward you with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway through its standard 8 speed automatic transmission and full time Quattro all wheel drive system. Thanks to its hatchback trunk and folding rear seatbacks, the RS 7 also offers considerably more cargo space than a traditional sedan. The two-passenger backseat is the only real weak spot for the taller folks, as the sloping rear roof line limits headroom for tall riders. Also, there’s no middle seat for a fifth occupant so Uber won’t let you use it as supercar Taxi.

If you’re fortunate enough to be considering a vehicle in the segment, you’ve got some enticing options. The 2015 Porsche Panamara also provides astounding performance, handling better than the RS 7 at the limit. Caution, although it’s considerably pricier and arguably less stylish in some peoples view.

The Mercedes Cls63AMG and BMW 6 Series Grand Sport Coupe are also serious players for the four-door-supercar crown, but they lack the RS 7’s hatchback versatility, and they suffer from comparable rear-headroom shortages.

The Hellcat Charger muscle car from Dodge is a super bargain with its 707 HP but will attract a different type of buyer.

The exterior design is exquisite in RS7 form dressed up on my test vehicles with both the Carbon Optic Package and an extended Carbon Package. This four door with 21 inch 5 spoke wheels was dazzling from every angle.

The RS 7’s interior is typical Audi, combining a handsome design, tight construction and excellent materials throughout. The RS 7 also benefits from RS-specific carbon-fiber inlays, aluminum pedals, many other RS-themed flourishes and ambient LED lighting.

Audi’s familiar Multi Media Interface (MMI) system controls entertainment, communication and navigation functions via a dash-mounted pop-up screen and a control dial surrounded by buttons on the center console. The system features logical menus, crisp graphics, and a touchpad to increase functionality. Other systems like BMW’s iDrive or Mercedes’ COMAND are a bit easier to learn, but once you’ve got the hang of things, the MMI system is one of the best available.

Due to the RS 7’s aggressively raked roofline, backseat headroom is tight even for adults over 5 foot 10 inches. Legroom is abundant, and there’s something to be said for the individual comfort of the twin rear bucket seats versus a traditional three-across bench seat.

The RS 7’s hatchback design permits easier loading of larger items that just won’t fit through the trunk opening of a conventional sedan. The space itself is generous, too, measuring 24.5 cubic feet behind the rear seatbacks. That’s almost ten cubic feet more than rivals like the CLS, and the RS 7 offers even more when you fold those seatbacks down. I like hatchbacks and have owned Corvette and Mustang hatch models. Hopefully, American’s will begin to realize that Hatches are both cool and practical.

While driving the RS7 around greater Orlando, Florida, the optional Dynamic Ride Control is best left in the automatic setting. The system reacts so quickly mixing suspension settings back and forth effortlessly from the firmer Dynamic setter and the softer confront setting. The 4.0Liter Turbo V-8 is a pleasure, although at lower speeds it does not feel as powerful or as fast as it really is in reality.

This car falls into the category of if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it. My 2015 Audi RS 7 4.0T Quattro Tiptronic loaded with options totaled $122,625.

In heavy Florida rain, you can feel the Quattro system keep you planted through turns. Also, I also loved the head up display and the fine Bose Audio System. Without question of the finest Supercar sedans, I have ever driven.
